Carbonated Soft Drinks

Cold drinks and beverages have carbon dioxide causing gas carbonation

Carbonated soft drinks are drinks that usually contain carbonated water, a sweetener, and natural or artificial flavouring. The sweetener may be a sugar, high-fructose corn syrup, fruit juice, a sugar substitute (in the case of diet drinks), or some combination of these. Soft drinks may also contain caffeine, colourings, preservatives, and/or other ingredients. These widely available drinks include Fanta Orange, Sprite, Coca-Cola and Pepsi.

In Zambia, carbonated soft drinks are one of the most consumed beverages. They are produced in almost every province in the country and their availability is remarkable. From the largest cities to some of the remotest villages, carbonated soft drinks are available in a variety of flavours and packaging. They constitute a major part of the country’s soft drinks industry. With many companies producing carbonated soft drinks, the market for these products also continues to show remarkable potential for growth.

Carbonated soft drinks are further divided into colas and non-colas, as well as diet and regular soft drinks. Cola-flavoured beverages usually contain added phosphoric acid as an acidulant because it can strengthen acidity. Non-cola soft drinks usually use citric acid as an acidulant.

Carbonated soft drinks can be classified into 3 main categories:

  • Sparkling water
  • Juice
  • Energy drinks

Examples of carbonated beverages include soft drinks, sparkling water (seltzer water), and carbonated wine, which has many characteristics of fermented sparkling wine but is less expensive to produce.

Coca-Cola - is ranked as the leading carbonated soft drink company in the United States with a volume share of 44.9 per cent.

Carbonation occurs when liquid is infused with CO2 (carbon dioxide). The bubbles don't activate until the drink comes in contact with air. For example, if you were to look at a bottle of root beer, you wouldn't see any fizzy action until you twist off the cap.
