Fish are a class of aquatic vertebrates. The combination of gills, fins and the fact that they live only in the water make fish different from all other animals. Fish spend all of their lives in the water and are cold-blooded. Zambia is land locked and all local fish are freshwater and live in the lakes and rivers of Zambia. The fish species most sought after by recreational fishermen are Tigerfish Hydrocyncus vittatus, Vundu Heterobrachus longifilis, Cornish Jack Mormyrops deliciosus, Eastern Bottlenose Mormyrus longirostris, Nembwe Serranchromis robustus, Nkupe Distichodus mossambicus and the various River Bream and Tilapia species.

The largest freshwater fish in Zambia and Southern Africa is the Vundu (Heterobranchus longifilis). It is an air breathing catfish that can reach up to 1.5 m in length.

Tigerfish are probably the world's most infamous freshwater fish, revered for their power and fierce set of teeth. Some of the Zambezi River's other noteworthy game fish include Yellow-belly Bream (Nembwe) and Vundu, a local species of catfish that grows up to 45 kg (100 lbs).

There are 11 major fisheries: four within the Congo Basin (Bangweulu, Mweru-Luapula, Mweru-Wantipa and Tanganyika) and seven in the Zambezi Basin (Kafue, Kariba, Lukanga, Upper Zambezi, Lower Zambezi, Itezhi-Tezhi and Lusiwashi).

Above the Victoria Falls is a calmer portion of Zambezi River where one can go and have en exciting experience fishing for Tiger fish. These elusive fish require a bit of skill to catch as they are quite aggressive - which is part of the thrill. Also, they can grow as big as 33lb (15kgs) so you could be in for a big fight. However inexperienced you may be, a day spent on the Zambezi with a line in the water and the wilderness spilling across the banks, is a day well spent.
