A coat typically is an outer garment for the upper body as worn by either gender for warmth or fashion. Coats typically have long sleeves and are open down the front and closing by means of buttons, zippers, hook-and-loop fasteners, toggles, a belt, or a combination of some of these.

Modern coats include the:

British Warm - A British Warm is typically a heavy, double-breasted wool coat made from a 100% wool cloth known as Melton.[4] It is taupe-coloured, has peak lapels and leather buttons, often has epaulettes, and is slightly shaped. It falls just above the knee and is sometimes belted.

Chesterfield coat - The dark Chesterfield, which comes with a defining velvet collar has no horizontal seam or side bodies, but can still be somewhat shaped using the side seams and darts. It can be single- or double-breasted and has been popular in a wide variety of fabrics, typically heavier weight tweeds, charcoal and navy, and even the camel hair classic.

Covert coat - A covert coat or Crombie coat is a gentleman's overcoat typically with notched lapels which originated in the late 19th century as a "short topcoat" to be worn for hunting and horse riding.

Duffel coat - A duffel coat (also duffle coat) is a coat made from duffel, a coarse, thick, woollen material. The name derives from Duffel, a town in the province of Antwerp in Belgium where the fabric originated. Duffel bags were originally made from the same material.

Parka - A parka or anorak is a type of coat with a hood, often lined with fur or faux fur. This kind of garment is a staple of Inuit clothing, traditionally made from caribou or seal skin, for hunting and kayaking in the frigid Arctic. Some Inuit anoraks require regular coating with fish oil to retain their water resistance.

Pea coat - Today, the style is considered a classic, and pea coats are worn by all manner of individuals. The style has evolved to the addition of hoods.

While some of the jackets seen on the street are genuine navy surplus, most are designs inspired by the classic uniform and available from retailers with design variations that reflect current fashion trends, including a variety of fabrics and colours.

Raincoat or Mackintosh - A raincoat is a waterproof or water-resistant suit worn to shield the body from rain. In most fashion markets including America, France, and Asia, a raincoat refers to both the top and bottom including trousers. The term rain jacket is sometimes used to refer to raincoats that are waist length. A rain jacket may be combined with a pair of rain pants to make rain clothing. Rain clothing may also be in one piece, like a boilersuit.

Trench coat - A trench coat or trenchcoat is a variety of coats made of waterproof heavy-duty fabric, originally developed for British Army officers before the First World War, and becoming popular while used in the trenches. The trench coat was typically worn as a windbreaker or as a rain jacket, and not for sole protection from the cold in winter. Although many come with removable wool liners for additional warmth, they are usually not as warm as an overcoat.
