Concrete Blocks

Concrete block is one of several precast concrete products used in construction

A concrete block is primarily used as a building material in the construction of walls. A concrete block is one of several precast concrete products used in construction.

Blocks are beneficial to builders as they help speed construction but are extremely harmful to the environment as they score very high on both embodied carbon as well as operational carbon.

In Zambia, blocks come in 4-inch, 6-inch and 8-inch sizes. Types of blocks are Hollow concrete blocks, Aerated Autoclaved Concrete Block, Concrete Bricks, Solid concrete blocks, Lintel blocks and Concrete stretcher blocks.

Concrete blocks have greater compressive strength than normal clay bricks and have less water absorption property than clay bricks. Concrete bricks are generally made of cement, sand and stones. In Zambia, these blocks are generally used in building construction as well as wall fences due to their beautiful and modern aesthetic look.

Advantages of using concrete blocks

  • Concrete Blocks, unlike traditional bricks, have a consistent size that lowers the need for plaster, making them a more cost-effective solution. The mortar consumption rate is lower than in traditional masonry construction, but the overall strength of the structure is increased.
  • The reduced wall thickness due to narrower Concrete Blocks than a traditional brick masonry wall makes the space is larger by increasing the carpet surface.
  • It effectively absorbs sound and protects the interiors from noise pollution. Using concrete blocks provides additional fire protection
  • Concrete block building is more systematic, faster, and stronger than brick masonry because of the vast size of the blocks.
  • Better thermal insulation is provided
  • Protects precious agricultural land that is extensively mined to produce clay bricks.
  • Individual pieces can be manufactured to a larger customized size and shape, allowing for a quick building cycle turnaround.
