Street Lights

A street light, light pole, lamp pole, lamppost, street lamp, light standard

A street light, light pole, lamp pole, lamppost, street lamp, light standard, or lamp standard is a raised source of light on the edge of a road or path.

Types of street lights

  • Metal Halide Street Lights : Metal-halide lamps are used for general lighting purposes both indoors and outdoors, such as commercial, industrial, and public spaces, parking lots, sports arenas, factories, and retail stores, as well as residential security lighting; automotive and specialty applications are further fields of usage.
  • High Pressure Sodium (HPS) Street Lights : High-pressure sodium (HPS) lamps are part of the family of high intensity light bulbs that put out large amounts of light generally needed for street lighting and security lighting. The combination of metals and gasses within inside the glass tube produces an orange-white light commonly found in street lights.
  • Low Pressure Sodium (LPS) Street Lights : It is most visible in street lighting. Sodium-vapour lamps are good for night-time illumination because of their high efficiency and because the light they produce penetrates mist and fog particularly well.
  • Light Emitting Diode (LED) Street Lights : An LED street light is an integrated light that uses light emitting diodes (LED) as its light source. These are considered integrated lights because, in most cases, the luminaire and the fixture are not separate parts.
  • Phosphor-Converted Amber (PCA) LED Street Lights : A phosphor-converted LED refers to an LED package that uses phosphor conversion (PC) to broaden the spectral power distribution (SPD) of its optical radiation. An LED chip by nature is a narrow-band emitter with a full width at half maximum (FWHM) value in the range of from about 15 nm to about 30 nm.
  • Narrow-Band Amber (NBA) LED Street Lights : 2700K and 3000K LEDs are mostly used for indoor lighting. The initial cost of LED street lighting is high and as a consequence it takes several years for the savings on energy to pay for that. The high cost derives in part from the material used since LEDs are often made on sapphire or other expensive substrates.

Street lighting provides a number of important benefits. It can be used to promote security in urban areas and to increase the quality of life by artificially extending the hours in which it is light so that activity can take place. Street lighting also improves safety for drivers, riders, and pedestrians.

High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lamps are one of the most common bulbs for street lights in existence today. They produce white light through a mixture of different gases and they are highly preferred because of less maintenance.

Parts of a street light

  • Solar Battery Assembly.
  • Light Controls.
  • Solar Light Fixture.
  • Fixture Mounting Bracket.
  • Pole.

The most common streetlight operating voltage was 120 volts (62%) followed by 240 volts (28%). Most entities that own streetlights (82%) use individual photocells to control the on/off function of the streetlight
