Paper and board are versatile materials used to package foods. Paper packaging can e.g. be made of parchment paper or have the shape of bags to package loose foods. Carton board is commonly used for e.g. liquid and dry foods, frozen foods and fast food.

According to the ISO standardisation body, a paper product with a gram- mage exceeding 200 g/m² is called paperboard; however the definition by the Confederation of European Paper Industries, CEPI, reads “paper is usually called board when it is heavier than 220 g/m²”.

Paperboard is quite commonly used for packaging food and beverage products including juices, milk, and cereal products. Paperboard packaging comes in several grades. Solid bleached sulfate (SBS) paperboard contains at least 80% virgin bleached wood pulp.

Types of Paperboard

  • Solid Bleached Sulfate (SBS) A premium grade, brilliant white SBS has a clay-coated surface for high-quality printing and a top ply of bleached virgin hardwood fibers for smoothness.
  • Coated Unbleached Kraft (CUK)
  • Coated Recycled Paperboard.
  • Non-Bending Chipboard.
