Bedding

A flat-top sheet; either a blanket, quilt, or duvet, sometimes with a duvet cover

Bedding is the materials laid above the mattress of a bed for hygiene, warmth, protection of the mattress, and for decorative purposes. Bedding is the removable and washable portion of a human sleeping environment. Multiple sets of bedding for each bed are often washed in rotation and/or changed seasonally to improve sleep comfort. A set of bedding usually consists of a flat or fitted bed sheet that covers the mattress, a flat top sheet; either a blanket, quilt, or duvet, sometimes with a duvet cover, which can replace or be used in addition to the top sheet and a number of pillows with pillowcases. Bedding refers to the bedsheets, blankets, pillows, and other bed accoutrements that people use to cover and protect their mattresses. Types of bedding include mattress covers, fitted sheets, flat sheets, pillowcases, comforters, shams, quilts, and bed skirts.

A set of bedding generally consists of at least a flat or fitted bed sheet that covers the mattress; a flat top sheet; either a blanket, a quilt, or a duvet. Sometimes a duvet cover is to be used in addition to or instead of – the top sheet, and a number of pillows with pillowcases are also referred to as pillow shams.

There are three main sheets to consider when buying bedding: fitted, top, and pillowcases. Fitted: The fitted sheet is the first layer of bedding. The fitted sheet, complete with an elastic band around the edges, fits snugly on top of your mattress. If you have a mattress protector, it will go on top of that.

The main difference between a duvet and a comforter is that a comforter is just one piece of bedding while a duvet requires two separate pieces — an insert and cover. A bottom sheet, or fitted sheet, is the sheet with the elastic edge that fits over your mattress—hence the name "bottom" or "fitted" sheet.

Flat sheets – also known as top sheets – are traditionally placed on top of the fitted sheet, but beneath duvets and blankets. These are there to make the bed appear more inviting, and to protect your duvet covers and blankets from getting dirty.

Duvets tend to be fluffier and warmer compared to comforters thanks to their high quality down or down alternative fill. Comforters tend to be much flatter with lower quality insulation and may require an additional blanket during colder months.

Cotton is the prime choice of fabric to make bed sheets that are not only soft, comfortable, and durable but also hypoallergenic, and environment-friendly. What is the most durable fabric for sheets? When it comes to durability, cotton is the best fabric. 100% cotton is the most popular because it's soft, strong and comfortable to lie on. Polyester or cotton/polyester blends are often more durable and less expensive, but they don't feel as natural. You can also choose from novelty fibres (like lyocell or linen) for a unique feel.

Sheets should be completely replaced after 2-3 years. Visible signs of wear and tear (thinning, yellowing, fading) are the most obvious indicators your sheets are past their prime, but you might start to feel the decline as well, which can disrupt your oh-so-important sleep.

But there is one constant, key way to tell the difference between a duvet and a comforter — a duvet is designed to go inside a duvet cover, and a comforter, sometimes called a bedspread, is just one piece of bedding that's ready to go right out of the bag.

Since the duvet cover is two separate layers of fabric, it can be used alone as a light bed covering, taking the place of a summer blanket or quilt. Depending on the fabric, the duvet may not be as cosy as a traditional blanket as it was designed for protection, not necessarily warmth.
