Wedding Rings

A ring worn by a married person, given to them by their spouse at their wedding.

A ring made often with metal that is given by the groom to the bride during the wedding ceremony and or in a similar fashion can be given to the groom by the bride in a double-ring ceremony.

Wedding rings are the ideal symbol of marriage. On the day, during the ring exchange ceremony, and every day thereafter – your wedding ring is of great importance. These are the bands exchanged during the wedding ceremony. The exchange of the wedding rings serves as a lifelong promise between you and your partner.

Wedding rings are usually more simplistic in design and don’t necessarily feature gemstones. Often couples choose to have similar wedding ring designs – possibly of the same metal. Women wear their wedding- and engagement rings on the same finger, so it is important that the two compliment each other.

Engagement rings are usually a more flashy ring with a large gemstone, used to propose marriage. This ring is worn as a symbol that you are betrothed to someone else, but not yet married. Traditionally the engagement ring is only worn by women, on the ring finger of the left hand.

Types of wedding rings

Silver - A favourite metal for many because it is inexpensive and beautiful.

Gold - The three most popular shades of gold are yellow gold, white gold, and rose gold. The more traditional bride will love yellow gold whereas rose gold is currently very trendy and popular. White gold rings are usually plated and therefore, it can lose its white colour over time.

Platinum - When it comes to the material the ring is made of, the harder metals are best, because your wedding ring needs to last a lifetime. Platinum is known for its extreme hardness and its beautiful white colour that never fades.

Titanium - If you have a sensitive skin you need to consider Titanium because it is hypo-allergenic YAY! Titanium is a darker metal but it is super strong and durable even though it has a lighter weight.

Ceramic - No this is not made of the same stuff as your coffee cup! Even though it is called ceramic, it is actually a super strong compound of Titanium and Ceramic called Titanium Carbide

Tungsten - Mostly men’s rings, tungsten rings are unbreakable.

Zirconium - Corrosion resistant metal.

Wood - These are the new trend on the block! Rather than having the whole ring made of wood, which would not be very durable, wood is inserted in a ring that is predominantly made of metal.

Traditionally, the wedding band is placed first on the left ring finger and then the engagement ring is placed on top of it. The wedding band symbolizes the bonded commitment between you and your partner, so wearing it first keeps the ring closest to the heart.

Historically, wedding rings have been documented to be worn on every finger, even the thumb. Today, wedding rings are most commonly worn on the fourth finger of the left hand

Traditionally, the wedding band goes first on the finger so it's closest to the heart. To ensure the proper position, some brides temporarily move their engagement ring to their right hand. Then, after the nuptials, they return the ring to their left hand over the wedding band.

Once you're married, tradition dictates that your engagement band be moved back to the third finger on your left hand. When you do so, your wedding ring should remain closest to your heart (where your spouse placed it on your wedding day) and your engagement ring is placed next to the wedding ring.

Since divorce rings are still relatively rare, you can wear this on any finger, although many people put it on the ring finger of their left hand to take the place of the marriage band.
