Apparel and Textiles

The apparel industry transforms fabrics produced by textile manufacturers into clothing by production workers who cut, sew and finish items on an assembly line. Whereas the textile industry is primarily concerned with the design, production and distribution of fabric (also called cloth) made from the knitting or weaving of yarn.

Apparel refers to clothing, especially outerwear, basically anything that is worn. A jogging suit is an example of sports apparel. Textile products are defined as items that are raw, semi-worked, semi-manufactured, manufactured, semi-made-up or made-up, exclusively composed of textile fibres, regardless of the mixing or assembly process employed.

There are various clothing types, based on the setting:

• Business attire – worn at work in the office
• Workwear - worn when doing physical labour
• Casual wear – worn when relaxing
• Formal wear – worn for events such as weddings
• Lingerie – lightweight undergarments such as women's bra

Accessories that are worn may include jackets, boots and shoes, cravats, ties, hats, bonnets, belts and suspenders, gloves, muffs, necklaces, bracelets, watches, eyewear, sashes, shawls, scarves, lanyards, socks, pins, piercings, rings, and stockings.
