A coach may also be called a motor coach, coach bus, or charter bus. Smaller models may be considered mini-coaches or minibuses. Unlike normal buses, coaches are primarily used for private transportation and are often used for long-distance travel where convenience and comfort are key.

In the 19th century the name coach was used for U.S. railway carriages, and in the 20th century to motor coaches. See John Taylor (poet) for a very adverse opinion of the arrival of horse-drawn coaches in England.
