- Multiple unrelated jobs - Here, you could work as an accountant in a supermarket, a chef in a restaurant and then as a receptionist in a hospital. Because these jobs are completely different from the others, predicting your next position is practically impossible.
- Advancing within an occupation - This is when you are advancing in the same occupation, whether you work for the same company or at a different one. A good example is; if you are working as a sales executive, you could eventually be moved to a marketing position where you could still handle sales issues.
- Advancing in the same industry but not occupation - Staying in the same industry, but not necessarily the same occupation. For example, if your goal is to be a manager at a hotel, you could start out as a night auditor, then move to an assistant manager and eventually manager.
