There are no officially sanctioned rules of poetry. However, as with all creative writing, having some degree of structure can help you reign in your ideas and work productively.

As with narrative, there are "elements" of poetry that we can focus on to enrich our understanding of a particular poem or group of poems. These elements may include, voice, diction, imagery, figures of speech, symbolism and allegory, syntax, sound, rhythm and meter, and structure.

The efforts of ancient thinkers to determine what makes poetry distinctive as a form, and what distinguishes good poetry from bad, resulted in "poetics"—the study of the aesthetics of poetry.

Most poetry is written in verse, rather than prose. This means that it uses line breaks, alongside rhythm or meter, to convey something to the reader. Rather than letting the text break at the end of the page (as prose does), verse emphasizes language through line breaks.

Poetry is the use of words and language to evoke a writer's feelings and thoughts, while a poem is the arrangement of these words. Poetry is the process of creating a literary piece using metaphor, symbols and ambiguity, while a poem is the end result of this process.

There's a common misconception that poems have to rhyme. A lot of classic and well-known poems do. It's true that if you want something that will stick in people's heads or sound good read aloud rhymes help. But they're not necessary.

Many of us feel angry, frustrated, sad, or fearful from time to time. However, because these feelings are unpleasant, we often keep them locked up inside of us. Writing and reading poetry help us let these feelings out and also better understand them.

Writing poetry isn't a God-given talent or natural personality trait that is given to successful poets. Creativity, curiosity, and perhaps eccentricity are natural personality characteristics of published poets…but the ability to write is not a personality trait. It is a learned skill.
