A government is an institution through which leaders exercise power to make and enforce laws. A government's basic functions are providing leadership, maintaining order, providing public services, providing national security, providing economic security, and providing economic assistance.


Government is closely related to politics. To study politics is in essence to study government or more broadly, to study the exercise of authority. Politics is the art of government, the exercise of control within the society through the making and enforcement of collective decisions.

Governance has been defined as the rules of the political system to solve conflicts between actors and adopt decision (legality). It has also been used to describe the "proper functioning of institutions and their acceptance by the public"

The major types of political systems are democracies, monarchies, oligarchies, and authoritarian and totalitarian regimes.

Politics is the set of activities that are associated with making decisions in groups, or other forms of power relations among individuals, such as the distribution of resources or status.

Study of politics, governance and authority gives us a better understanding of who gets what at the moment, when, and how in politics. In reality, though, politics, in relation to social choices, addresses notions of rights and liberties.

Politics is the way that people living in groups make decisions. Politics is about making agreements between people so that they can live together in groups such as tribes, cities, or countries. In large groups, such as countries, some people may spend a lot of their time making such agreements.

While the responsibilities of all governments are similar, those duties are executed in different ways depending on the form of government. Some of the different types of government include a direct democracy, a representative democracy, socialism, communism, a monarchy, an oligarchy, and an autocracy.
