Travel Writing

Places, persons, and things in other places-also writing about how to travel,

The genre of travel literature encompasses outdoor literature, guide books, nature writing, and travel memoirs. Travel writing is writing about places, persons, and things in other places--also writing about how to travel, when to travel, and advice on travelling–all with the reader in mind. It's about relaying your travel experiences to others so that they may emulate them or at the very least not make the same mistakes you did.

Paul Theroux is probably the most highly-respected travel writer alive. Be written in first-person. Tell the story in the past tense. Be conversational in tone (dialogue can be useful here) Contain sensory details. Give the reader value in some way, whether that's providing useful tips for navigating or insight into a culture.

Write in the first person, past tense (or present if the action really justifies it), and make your story a personal account, interwoven with facts, description and observation. Many writers start their piece with a strong – but brief – anecdote that introduces the general feeling, tone and point of the trip and story.

Tips for Travel Writing

  • Write from a unique point of view. Your point of view is your specific reason for writing a travel piece.
  • Show, don't tell. The best stories do more than tell readers information about a place, they paint a vivid picture.
  • Be a good reader.
  • Be honest.

Travel writing can take many forms, such as newspaper articles, essays, journals, blogs and autobiography. It can also be written as a book, telling a longer narrative about a journey or place.

Travel writing celebrates the differences in manners and customs around the world. It helps the reader to understand other people and places. And it helps readers plan their own trips and avoid costly mistakes while traveling. But, most of all, it lets readers travel to far-off destinations that they may never see.
