Automobile accessory power can be transferred by several different means. However, it is always ultimately derived from the automobile's internal combustion engine, battery, or other "prime mover" source of energy.

The 12V socket, also known variously as a car cigarette lighter or 12V auxiliary power outlet, is the primary method by which power is delivered to portable electronics in cars, trucks, recreational vehicles, boats, and in a handful of other contexts.

The accessory wire is what triggers the stereo to turn on when your ignition key is in the "accessory" position

Getting into “accessory mode” is pretty straightforward. Simply turn your key clockwise until you land on the marked position. Keep in mind, you need to turn it much less than you typically do to start the car. If you can hear your engine running, then you're not in accessory mode.

You can run as many accessories as you want off one circuit as long as the total current of all those items isn't more than the fuse for the circuit.

The 12V accessory wire is connected from the stereo to the ignition switch accessory wires. So when you turn on the ignition, it activates the 12V accessory wire to turn on the stereo. This means that the 12V wire must stay connected to power the stereo

So, for all who were also wondering: The accessory mode will time out after some time only in the "park" mode. Otherwise it will stay active until the battery is drained.
