Wires, Cables & Cable Assemblies

The different types of electrical conductor wires and cables

Wires, cables and cable assemblies are important electric supplies due to there usefulness. A wire is a single cylindrical flexible strand of metal used to bear mechanical loads or electricity and telecommunication signals. A cable, on the other hand, is an assembly of one or more wires running side by side with the purpose of carrying electric current. Cable assemblies are a group of either cables or wires wrapped in an outer layer of a different product to keep cables or wires together and organized. Interested in purchasing high-quality affordable wires, cables, or cable assemblies? Browse through this category for various wires, cables and cable assemblies available in Zambian stores.

Cable assemblies are groups of cables which are arranged into a single unit for a particular purpose. Cable assemblies are also referred to as cable harnesses or wiring looms. These cables are grouped together in precisely the required length and orientation in order to make installation easier and quicker.

Cable assemblies come in a variety of options to include multi-conductor, coaxial/RF, wire and cable harnesses, complex military, flat ribbon, custom electro-mechanical, and more. Although there are similarities, there are variations as well.

A wire harness offers a cover that encases single cables, usually from the same material utilized in a cable assembly. One can see and remove an individual cable from a wire harness. In comparison, a cable assembly has multiple wires but is bundled together by a single external sleeve.

The basic key difference between wires and cables is that a wire is a single conductor whereas a cable is a group of conductors. Although, these conductors are made of a common material- copper or aluminium. Usually, the wires are bare and are twisted. But, some of the wires are coated with thin PVC layer

A cable harness, also known as a wire harness, wiring harness, cable assembly, wiring assembly or wiring loom, is an assembly of electrical cables or wires which transmit signals or electrical power

A wire is a single strand of material that conducts electricity. Harness assemblies manufacturer usually make these out of aluminium or copper. Cable assemblies are a group of cables or wires that are wrapped in an outer layer of a different product to keep the cables together.

Different colour wires serve different purposes

  • Black : Hot wire, for switches or outlets.
  • Red : Hot wire, for switch legs. Also for connecting wire between 2 hardwired smoke detectors.
  • Blue and Yellow : Hot wires, pulled in conduit. ...
  • White : Always neutral.
  • Green and Bare Copper : Only for grounding.

Cables are classified into 5 types depending upon their purpose as follows:

  • Ribbon Electric Cables. It consists of multiple insulated wires running parallel with one another and is used for transmission of multiple data simultaneously.
  • Shielded Cables.
  • Twisted Pair Cables.
  • Coaxial Cables.
  • Fibre Optics Cable.

A wiring harness is an organized set of wires, terminals and connectors that run throughout the entire vehicle and relay information and electric power, thereby playing a critical role in “connecting” a variety of components.

Wiring harness is the complete electrical wiring system of a vehicle. Once the chassis structure is assembled, the wiring harness, brake and fuel lines are put in place. An extensive network of wires form the wiring harness of a car. A wiring harness is the electrical distribution system of a car.

Sometimes called a cable or wiring loom, a harness assembly arranges groups of wires and/or cables into a single unit for protection and organization with various different terminals and connectors attached, that are formed in shape or layout that routes the connectors to the various connection points of an assembly.

The two categories of single-conductor wires are solid and stranded (also called braided). Solid wire is rigid and conducts electricity better. Stranded wire consists of smaller wires braided together.
