Examples are Stamped Concrete, Brick Pavers, Flagstone, Pea Gravel, Slate. Find a supplier of the paving stone. Achieve a stunning, durable, and unique outdoor patio with concrete pavers. • Concrete pavers. Concrete pavers are the most affordable patio pavers.
  • Brick pavers. The second cheapest paver for patios is brick pavers, which are cast and heat cured clay bricks, which come in primarily rectangular, but other shapes are also available.
  • Porcelain pavers.

Paving stones are more durable than concrete and can withstand more pressure per square inch. Whether you use cement pavers or want stone driveway paving, paving bricks and stones are typically stronger than concrete and can hold more weight on the surface before a crack shows up.

Before laying the pavers, a layer of bedding sand is placed over the compacted base material. This layer provides a bed into which the pavers are set. The sand bedding also helps to protect the sand joints from being eroded away.

As far as installation costs and concrete costs go, poured concrete is technically the most affordable per square foot. However, even though the upfront cost of pavers is higher, concrete pavers offer greater value and durability than poured concrete and stamped concrete. A properly installed and maintained concrete paver driveway can be expected to last 25 to 50 years.

Unlike concrete, pavers are significantly less prone to cracking, which is why a great number of homeowners prefer them. They bring a great number of other benefits, so it's no wonder that many choose them over concrete.

When homeowners invest in a paver patio, they can expect extreme durability, minimal maintenance and — you guessed it — added value to their home. According to Inman, a leading real estate news source, patio additions to homes (when done properly) can deliver a return on investment of anywhere between 30% to 60%.

Cobblestones are by far the longest-lasting pavers made of natural stone ordinarily obtained from quarries. These virtually indestructible pavers can last for more than a century and have a rough texture that gives driveways, patios and walkways a charming appearance that'll last for an entire lifetime.

The standard paver thickness for patios is 2-3/8 inches. This is the minimum thickness to properly distribute weight on the pavers, especially if more than one person at a time is going to be on the patio. The measurement above is ideal for properly installed pavers.

Pavers may be the easiest patio surface to install yourself. Pavers are set on sand or crushed concrete rather than bound with mortar. You can even lay pavers on top of your existing patio if it's level and in good condition, so there's no need to break up the old patio or excavate the ground.

Typically, it is not recommended to directly lay down pavers over dirt. For pavers to look and perform well in a permanent installation setting, the ground/dirt floor must be excavated, leveled, and hard compacted.
