When talking to other plant people, the terms “pot” and “planter” will be used interchangeably. Pots are generally smaller, round and are usually meant to contain one plant. Planters are generally meant for outdoors, are an irregular size, and can contain many plants.

Many stores have large containers they don't use, and many will be more than happy to let you take them for free. It's a good alternative to commercial pots. They are cheap and they provide great containers for your plants.

If you're planting in large containers, you can use a layer of plastic bottles at the bottom to help fill them up. The bottles should be empty, but not crushed, and have the caps on them. You can use water bottles or half-gallon jugs.

Colour plays a role in how much heat the pots will retain. Dark-coloured pots will absorb more sunlight and retain heat longer than light-coloured ones. The colour you choose should depend on the climate conditions in your area

Whether your potted plants are indoors or outdoors, proper drainage is an essential element to ensure they stay healthy. This process keeps water from pooling at the base of the pot, which can cause bacteria, fungus and root rot.

Plastic and fibreglass pots are frost-proof, as are many glazed ceramic pots. Unglazed terracotta pots have a porous structure that allows the pot walls to absorb water.

Terra cotta pots are a great option for indoor use, especially when it comes to plants that prefer dry soil, like succulents and cacti. These porous clay pots absorb water and allow excess moisture to be released from the soil more quickly.

Outdoor pots should have at least one drainage hole to ensure water can run freely through the soil and out the bottom. Indoor pots will generally not have a drainage hole, with the plant generally kept in its plastic pot using the decorative or 'cache' pot as the saucer.

Plants in ceramic glazed pots generally grow better than plants in plastic, metal, or terracotta pots. The main reason is because the soil in the ceramic pot is able to absorb moisture better and it won't dry out as fast.

Holes in the bottom of the planter are essential for proper drainage. The holes give the excess water an escape route so it doesn't stay in the soil. Many flower pots come with only one drainage hole. Others don't have any holes at all.
