Power Tools

Power tools are used in industry, construction, the garden, for housework tasks

Power tools are used in industry, in construction, in the garden, for housework tasks such as cooking, cleaning, and around the house for purposes of driving (fasteners), drilling, cutting, shaping, sanding, grinding, routing, polishing, painting, heating and more. Power tools are classified as either stationary or portable, where portable means hand-held. Portable power tools have obvious advantages in mobility. Stationary power tools, however, often have advantages in speed and precision. A typical table saw, for instance, not only cuts faster than a regular hand saw. Stationary power tools for metalworking are usually called machine tools. Drill presses and bench grinders are used for both woodworking and metalworking.

There are many different types of power tools available to complete jobs around the home and shop. Adding to the convenience of these tools is that there are attachments available allowing them to be used for different tasks. These tools include, but aren't limited to, drills, grinders, saws and sanders.

Power Tool Replacement Parts

  • Power Cords. Power cords are vulnerable to a lot of wear and damage.
  • Batteries. Batteries are one of the most common replacement tool parts.
  • Carbon Brushes.
  • Drive Belts.
  • Power Switch.
  • Bearings.
  • Accessories and Bits.

The most commonly used corded power tools include hammer drills at 87%, reciprocating saws at 86%, power drills at 85%, circular saws at 74% and rotary hammers at 70%. For cordless power tools, the most commonly used are power drills at 84%, followed by drill drivers at 75% and reciprocating saws at 71%.

Hand tools are exactly what they sound like – tools that require manual labor to use. Power tools have a power source that allows them to operate automatically and without human intervention. You should consider having a range of different tools at your disposal.

Drill Attachments

  • Rotary rasp. Rotary rasp. Grind off extra wood with a rotary rasp.
  • Self-centring hinge bits. Drill accurately centred holes. Drill accurately centred holes with speed and confidence.
  • Drywall bit. Drive drywall screws to the proper depth.
  • Hex bit. Use a hex bit for screwing.

Drill bits are designed to drill holes in a variety of different common materials. These include different types of wood, metal, plastic, ceramic tile, porcelain and concrete.

Most power tools, including drills, circular saws, belt sanders, and chainsaws, operate at sound levels above the 85 dB limit, some even reaching over 100 dB. NIOSH strongly recommends wearing hearing protection while using these kinds of power tools.

Advantages of Electric Power Tools

  • Better performance. Often, power tools can perform tasks that are impossible for hand tools to complete.
  • Speed and efficiency.
  • Precision and accuracy.
  • Convenience.

If you're going to stick with common tasks around the house,, you can opt for lower-power tools. But if you want more versatility, go bigger. “The 12V tools deliver ample power for most common household jobs, and the 18V tools offer more power and flexibility to tackle big and small jobs,”
