Plastic Tubes

Lightweight and versatile, used commonly as flow lines for fluids and gases

Plastic tube is lightweight and versatile, used commonly as flow lines for fluids and gases in pneumatic, hydraulic, process, medical and many other applications.

Types of Plastic Pipes

  • Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) This is the material you're probably most familiar with, and it serves a number of roles in a household aside from in the plumbing
  • Chlorinated polyvinyl chloride (CPVC)
  • Cross-linked polyethylene (PEX)

Polyurethane and PVC tubing are the most flexible materials available. Polyurethane tubing is very durable with outstanding memory, making it a good choice for coiled, portable, or self-storing pneumatic hose applications.

Schedule 40 PVC pipe is strong, rigid, and can handle pressure applications. For jobs that require a higher pressurization though, schedule 80 pipe is better suited.

PVC pipe is more flexible than ABS, while ABS is a bit stronger and can resist a higher shock or impact. Additionally, PVC has an advantage in that it's better at muffling the sound of water as it flows through the pipework

CPVC or Chlorinated Polyvinyl Chloride is a thermoplastic like PVC however the difference lies in the extra chlorination process (67% Chlorine) that gives additional quality like durability and the higher maximum operating temperature.

ABS: Short for acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, this sturdy plastic was one of the first plastics used for residential plumbing. ABS pipes are always black and tend to be softer than PVC. They are mainly used for vent and drain lines, along with other outdoor underground uses where cold temperatures are common.

Colour can be a clue, too. Often CTS CPVC is a light yellowish color, while schedule 80 CPVC (NPS) is a light gray color. PVC pipe and fittings usually comes in white or dark grey. Always check the manufacturer printing on the pipe to be sure.

Vinyl tubing is softer than poly and thus is considered easier to work with. Poly tubing may be a bit stiffer at first, but it does have some benefits. It withstands UV rays very well and does not expand, as much, when heated.

Flexible PVC pipe in 2.5" and larger sizes is available by the roll or 2.5", 3" and 4" by the foot and sometimes in the clearance section. Black flexible PVC pipe is only approved for irrigation and pools.

There are five main types of plumbing pipe materials that are still in use today: copper, galvanized steel, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), and cross-linked polyethylene (PEX)

Economical, versatile polyvinyl chloride (PVC, or vinyl) is used in a variety of applications in the building and construction, health care, electronics, automobile and other sectors, in products ranging from piping and siding, blood bags and tubing, to wire and cable insulation, windshield system components and more.

Both polyurethane (PU) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) are popular choices when it comes to the making and manufacturing of hose.
